How we can help

While we have experience with most building services trades, we specialise in mechanical engineering for buildings covering both the HVAC and fire protections trades. Our offerings extend past design documentation and into the broader design of buildings, allowing us to model and report on things like thermal comfort and indoor environment quality.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning

Ventilation Design

Our primary job as mechanical engineers is to ensure a building complies with requirements of the New Zealand building code and this is mostly done through ventilation systems. Our thorough knowledge of these building code requirements enables us to provide compliance without sacrificing building occupant health and wellbeing.

Commercial air conditioning outdoor units

Air Condition Design

We build upon our ventilation designs by designing systems which ensure maximum occupant comfort through active heating and cooling. We have experience designing systems from the smallest heat pump to large commercial office building systems. We believe that the least sustainable thing you can do is design a building that nobody wants to occupy, and a well-designed air conditioning system is critical in achieving this.

Organised power and data cabling

System Troubleshooting

We can offer advice on existing systems which aren’t performing as they should, which need to be expanded to meet a new demand, or even to make sure they are operating as efficiently as the can be.

Fire Protection

Active Fire System Design

Our fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and hydrant system designs close the gap between what is specified in most fire engineering reports  and what needs to be presented to contractors for tender. Our designs help project teams understand the allowances that need to be made to ensure that these life safety systems can be provided in an efficient and unobtrusive manor.

Design build contract documenation

Design Build Contracts

We produce robust design build documentation to allow fire protection contractors to do their job, knowing the correct allowances have been made for them, and that all the information they need has been provided. This makes for much more competitive tenders and lower install costs for our clients.

Energy and Environment Analysis

Thermal and Energy Modelling

Thermal performance analysis of a building is the foundation for our air conditioning system sizing and design, but we also utilise these models to provide our clients with insights into system running costs and optimisations in the overall building design.

Daylight modeling floor plan lux level plot

Daylight Modelling

Our daylight modelling reports are primarily used to demonstrate compliance with section G7 of the New Zealand building code. We work with architects to ensure that we can squeeze every last square metre out of an apartment design while still providing a compliant and comfortable environment for occupants. We also provide daylight modelling reports to show compliance with the Ministry of Education’s environmental quality requirements.

Uninsulated wall construction

H1 Reporting

We can provide reports to demonstrate compliance with all parts of section H1 of the building code, whether this is the thermal performance of construction elements, lighting power density, or even complying with the strict commercial building HVAC requirements.

Drafting and BIM Modelling

2D drawing symbols sheet

2D and 3D Drafting

We are experienced at producing high quality designs which are well communicated through our drawings and other documentation. We know the limitations of communicating complex ideas through sheets of A1 paper and we take pride in the high standard of drawings we produce. We utilise both AutoCAD and Revit to document our work to a level appropriate for every job.

3D BIM model with ductwork and pipework

BIM Administration

Our familiarity with industry standard building information modelling software means we are experienced in contributing to complex BIM models for projects which utilise this technology. We know that BIM is not right for all projects and can offer advice on the right level of information management for any type of project.

System Surveying and As-Builts

Our practical experience overseeing construction work makes us well equipped to identify and document existing systems. We produce as-built drawings not just for building owners to understand their own properties, but also for the purposes of assisting architects and engineers with future design work. We make it easy to understand both the constraints and the potential of existing buildings.
